Mailing list (mis)management?
Saturday, December 9th, 2006You would think that large (and even small) European organisations would be fully aware of their obligations under the Data Protection Directive, and would therefore act honestly, promptly and in line with data subject demands, when informed of changes to the purposes for which the data subject consents to their data being used. Or to put it another way, organisations should never subscribe a user to a mailing list without their consent (in other words, all mailing lists should be opt-in, rather than opt-out), and should immediately unsubscribe users when requested to do so. It’s called spamming, if they don’t.
Yet, many organisations contract out their mailing list operations to seemingly dubious organisations often located in dubious countries with poor data protection legislation, and it seems that these third-parties aren’t very good at complying with the Data Protection Directive at all.
The purpose of this page is to keep track of unsubscription requests and check just which organisations have actually complied.
